DESTINATION GUN: TRAVELING TO FIREARMS-RELATED SITES AROUND THE WORLD

In this series, I will share destinations I've visited that relate to firearms. Look around - these sites are everywhere!

Nestled into the countryside surrounding Mammoth Cave National Park is an unassuming hotel, golf course, and...shooting center. Rockcastle Shooting Center at Park Mammoth Resort is a gun-enthusiast's dream in the making. Currently straddling the line between "country club" and "gun-try club", this place is making strides to become the USA's premier shooting sports destination. Whether you like fast-paced USPSA or 3-Gun, shotgun sports, cowboy action, 3D archery, or general plinking, you'll be able to find a range to shoot on somewhere on the 2,000+ acres in Rockcastle.

In addition to all the shooting options, Rockcastle is home to a hotel, winery, golf course and restaurant. So after a day of shooting guns or golf balls, you can relax and enjoy the vista looking over the rolling hills near Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Plinking at Rockcastle

My parents are retired, and just last year finished construction on their dream house in Rockcastle Estates, a "Second Amendment Community" right on the shooting-centric property. So on a recent trip to visit them we made use of their club membership to reserve one of the action pistol "bays" to shoot a variety of guns with our less-firearms-experienced relatives. We had a great time! My dad went through the safety briefing and he rented the spot for us to shoot. The particular shooting bay we rented had high sand berms on both sides and behind the targets. We set up our own steel targets and could shoot from any distance, so long as we stayed in the area with berm on three sides. We had a blast and got to share our favorite firearms with friends and family.

3-Gun at Rockcastle

Rockcastle is well-suited to 3-Gun, which involves shooting (quickly) semi-auto pistols, centerfire rifles, and shotguns. Competitors typically move speedily through a "stage" of shooting and may fire one, two, or all three guns in a single stage. Stages get set up all over the property, and matches can take the whole weekend. Rockcastle has hosted some big matches, including the Trijicon Shooting Challenge and the AR15.com/Rockcastle Pro Am. This fall "The Rock" will host the Brownells' Ladies Multigun Fall Fest and the Blue Ridge Mountain 3 Gun match. Lots of fun to be had for the 3 gunners out there!

Long Range Rifle at Rockcastle

One of the many shooting ranges at Rockcastle is a large open field known as Thunder Valley. This range hosts many 1,000+ yard shoots, and shooters can reach out to 1,500 yards here. Wind conditions can be tricky in this valley, so I imagine shooting here is a big time challenge. Hopefully sometime soon when I come back to visit I'll be able to try it out.

Other Shooting at Rockcastle - Sporting Clays, Archery, HAVA, SASS

In addition to 3 Gun, long range, and plinking, Rockcastle hosts a plethora of other shooting sports. There is a sporting clays course, USPSA3D archery, and a western-themed range for Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) matches. In addition to all of this, Rockcastle hosts shoots for Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) and other pro-vet organizations. According to the owners of Rockcastle, there are over 53 shooting events scheduled for the next 12 months. If you like to shoot, Rockcastle Shooting Center is the place to visit.
