Checking In: #ShootFit Week 1

Checking In: #ShootFit Week 1

A week ago I shared my fitness journey to get back in shape for overall health and especially for smallbore and air rifle shooting. Competitive rifle was the first love for me in the shooting sports and I remained competitive after college, but over the last two years I let things slip with food and exercise. The shooting suit I wear to train and compete is custom made to fit me... or at least "me" as I was in high school. I'm pretty motivated to get in shape - so long as it's a shape that fits in my shooting suit!

Diet

I've focused a lot on diet. I tend to snack and overdo it. Thankfully, it's been easier to stop snacking recently as days get longer and there's more time to spend outside after work. I am also still learning to eat less in general. The best discovery has been peppermint tea to help me stop some of my cravings for dessert after a meal. It might be a mind trick but it works and makes me feel like I'm still getting a "treat" at the end of dinner!

Goals - Long and Short Term

It works really well for me to have a couple goals going at once. Goal #1 is long term, and Goal #2 is shorter term.

  • Goal #1, as stated, is to lose weight and get in shooting-suit-shape. This will be longer term. I have about thirty pounds to lose - yikes! Even if I lost a pound a week, I won't be fitting into shooting trousers for another six or seven months. While it's great to have a vision for where I want to be in the long run, I need a short-term goal to get feedback on in the meantime.
  • Goal #2 is to improve my archery enough to be able to turkey hunt this spring using a bow. That is, to learn to shoot a compound bow to a lethal (to turkeys) level in three months. It's a challenge, and one that is motivating me to get onto the range each day. The benefit of such a short term goal is that I get feedback on my progress every time I shoot.

I also got a GoPro this week, so I'll be able to make more videos, especially "how-to's"! I already learned something about my archery form by taking time lapse photos as I shot. I've already picked out something to work on form-wise; can you see it?

Testing out the GoPro and got this cool sequence showing the arrow in midair!

Between improving my diet and working toward my goals, I'm making progress! My weight is dropping slowly but surely. More importantly, my archery is improving and I'm proving to myself that I can make small changes and see a difference. Baby steps to #ShootFit!
